Does your fiction begin with death?

Perhaps a Hero has no romantic partner, and is looking for the «missing piece» to complete her life. Thisis often symbolized in fairy tales by having the Hero experience a loss or a death in the family. Many fairy tales begin with the death of a parent or the kidnapping of a brother or sister. This subtraction from the family unit sets the nervous energy of the story in motion, not to stop until the balance has been restored by the creation  of a new family or the reuniting of the old.

THE WRITER’S JOURNEY ~ THIRD EDITION. Christopher Vogler. Published by Michael Wiese Productions

I don’t know where I read it. Probably Instagram. It said not to write about characters with dead parents or siblings.

Is the reason most of the people living in the western world experiencing death less and less? Mortality is not the same it was in 1930 for example.  Hence, to find characters struggling with dead is uncomfortable.

Which is rather amusing. We find a baby, a child or even a young person’s (they were only 40 y.o.) death’s overwhelming. Sanitary measures, vaccines and other medical discoveries have had more babies to survive just birth. Remember doctors manipulating corpses and getting their unwashed hands on the mother and baby. Nowadays more children survive their first five years. Chicken pox was deadly (currently, it is deadly because parents believe it is better not to vaccine their little monster[1]). The young people could die of typhus, malaria…  Entire towns could disappear.

Add accidents. War. Violence. That doesn’t mean I advocate for death.

Death is not something that should be in every story. It is neither something that can be just swept under the rug. It is there. It is random. It is. Was? Lately the more people grow old naturally, the more movie stars of certain age look younger than their age without surgery. Are those better genes? A conspiracy to have common mortals to console themselves thinking death is still democratic?

What’s the fiction about death we need? Pasto kalo.
